THE ANIMAL PICTURE BOOK mission statement
There is some anecdotal evidence that modern urban kids don't know a lot about animals. They don't know an elephant from Adam. That's pretty sad. Why, just the other day, I was at the Los Angeles Zoo. A fox squirrel scampered by and a kid said "Look, a raccoon!" This is unacceptable. So I've decided to make a picture book-
1. A roughly evolutionary approach will be taken, from one-celled critters on up to human beings. (As a Roman Catholic who tries to be rationalistic when possible, I have no desire to produce an apologia for Creationism.) There will be digressions for insects, crustaceans and other critters that are not part of the general sweep of human evolution.
2. Certain problematic aspects of nature, such as predation and sexual dimorphism, will be represented, but not in a particularly graphic manner. It will be made clear that lions eat antelopes, but if kids want to see lions munching on strings of antelope guts they can watch it on Youtube.
3. Only very recently extinct animals will be represented, so I can narrow it down. I would love to draw a lot of ammonites, dinosaurs, pterosaurs, trilobites and australopithecines, but I would also like to keep it simple.
4. Each drawing should ideally tell the reader something interesting about the animal. For example, the Seahorse illustration tells the reader that seahorses hang on to things with their tails.
5. I am not going to break my ass making accurate drawings. The drawings are all going be easily-recognizable caricatures.
6. Text will be limited to page headings and species labeling. The parents who are reading the book with their kid can explain whatever strange things are going on.
7. I will try to depict a mix of well-known (i.e., lions) and somewhat obscure (i.e. parrotfish) animals.
8. The Animal Picture Book is only an introduction. Kids who are interested in animals have a lot of other resources at their disposal. Mom and dad can help them out with that.^_^

(Maybe you're wondering how this turned out...As it happened, right before the Swiss Army mouse plunged his corkscrew into our cat, he suddenly paused and pulled a tiny walkie-talkie out of somewhere. After a brief exchange, he yelled 'Back to base NOW!' and they all ran away.)

More second pass stuff. I was liking how this page was turning out...simple and elegant, like a perfectly brewed cup of green tea, or a big wad of raw ground tuna.*

I'm not really sure what kind of line art I want for the final version, something like this, maybe, or something grittier and scratchier. That's another nice thing about doing a couple of preliminary passes, I can play around in different styles.

*with just a little bit of smelt roe mixed in for texture, topped off with a confetti-like sprinkle of toasted green onions.

Been in sort of a funk lately. I feel like my graphic novel is going rather well, but I haven't found a job yet...I figured that since I really want to be a character designer, I should redouble my efforts and pursue it like a tiger, not like a slug.

Powers- Hyper-omnivory, invulnerability (because anything that goes into her body is absorbed without a trace)
Weaknesses- Blunt trauma, starvation
During a routine high school field trip to Dr. Axoneme's brand new supercollider, Dee Vower accidentally fell on top of a very small black hole. Instead of being sucked in, as a normal person* would be, she became fused with it.
For fear that the black hole within will absorb her, she now eats anything that wanders into her path--people, animals, cars, tanks, gym teachers, raisins, kryptonite, guns, and planetoids, which, once consumed, wind up in a dark and lonely parallel universe.
Motivated by survival, (with a touch of sadism,) Eatgirl has no plan, agenda, or ideological program. Several supervillain organizations have tried to recruit her without success.
She lives next to a landfill in New Jersey where her activities are unlikely to be noticed.

*Her father left when she was very young, but Dee's mother asserts that he was actually Radio, the Greek god of Radioactivity.

There are life drawing classes every day at Disney (including costumed models, hence the dude in the Zorro outfit)--pretty sweet! I'm going to try and go when I'm not busy. Practice is something you can never get enough of. Mostly I scanned these to show my folks (my dad is a pin-up painter, among other things) but I might as well post them here too.

First, the Hairy Gods for the Cha Des challenge. (I feel that this is a fertile topic. I might do more.)

I really liked Sweeney Todd...um...except for that crappy tuneless pattering noodly music. Everything else was awesome. I tried to draw the main characters as fast as I could with no regard to construction or anything.=p

Hmm hmm.

This is the little critter from CJ7 (which, for those who haven't seen it, is sort of a Chinese working-class ET sort of thing by the nosebleed-inducingly brilliant Stephen Chow.) It's an alien toy-slash-dog thing.

As I was drawing this, it suddenly occured to me that I didn't really know what a motorcycle looked like.

And speaking of bikers, I recently got an email from someone I'd met six years ago, back when I was going to the University of Delaware. I hadn't taken any lifedrawing classes at that point. Anyway, she'd gotten a tattoo of one of my notebook sketches, and sent me some pics. I sort of have mixed feelings about it, because I've improved a lot since then, and it's a little weird to have your old obsolete art immortalized on someone's skin. But she's happy with it, so I guess that's what matters.^^

Apparently she named him 'Simon.'

This was a story test for Blue Sky. I was supposed to do a scenario in which two characters are in a room and one annoys the other, with action and humor elements. Or something. I didn't get the job. C'est la vie. (Maybe some of the spatial arrangements were kind of unclear...or the pacing was wrong...or maybe it was just too weird...)
Oh, I should mention that the guy beating the monster with the bisected nurse was my friend Jody Sol's idea.^^ He's quite the smarty pants.

I just got back from Chincoteague Island in VA. It's most famous for its wild ponies, but I like the birds and sea creatures best.^^

EDIT- Crap, I posted them too early. I thought today was tomorrow. Well, here they are.
These are for the character design challenge in Austin Madison's blog. This week's theme was 'ELDERLY MERMAIDS.' I suppose if there are young, sexy mermaids, there are are old mermaids too. I'm sure Ariel's grandma isn't as hideous as these, but I would rather draw hideous.^^ (Coloring's a bit sloppier than I would like...I don't have access to a wacom, so I had the use the mouse.)
This little fisherman must be really f-ing strong...

My dad and I were watching ERAGON (it blows, btw) and kvetching about badly-designed reptilian characters. It seems that they frequently soften up and 'humanize' the facial features to the point that the animals lose all their spiky saurian appeal. So I tried drawing some raptors that were cute but still looked like themselves.

Also, some more stuff for my new portfolio.

(PS, I still haven't heard back from any of the studios, so if some of you could put in a good word for me at your place of work, I'd appreciate it. My parents would, too.^_^)

Maybe angler fish are kind of overdone by now, but...I don't care.

EDIT- One more thing, a little animal my dad invented. It usually looks pretty unimposing, but its spectacular threat display can induce heart attacks in larger animals.

Real quick- My mom is a Philosophy teacher at the University of Delaware, and she does the Philosophy Dept. news letter and has me do drawings for it. (They are usually owl-related as owls are a symbol of wisdom.) Anyway, one of her colleagues, Richard Hanley, is writing a book about the philosophy of South Park. He claims the book is incredibly shocking. So I was asked to draw some owl reactions.

I turned in my film. Pop the champizzy! And, um, open a bottle of sparkling white wine as well. Youtube coming soon.

EDIT- Oh, haha, I forgot why I had titled my entry 'Bird Zap.' (I think my brain still hasn't recovered from crunch time yet!) The reason is that I was going to post this lifedrawing from a few years ago:

The model claimed that he went through several zebra finches a week like this, and that he had a special arrangement with a local pet store. I thought it was pretty disturbing, but not enough to leave the classroom.
